The Dancing Dialogue Story

Dancing Dialogue was founded on a simple yet profound understanding:

The body speaks first.

While many therapeutic practices focus on the mind-body connection, we honor something deeper. We believe in the body-mind connection, a beautiful reversal that places the felt experience at the center of healing. Your body holds the stories that words cannot capture, the emotions that thoughts cannot fully express, the wisdom that the mind has yet to understand.

Dr. Suzi Tortora, our founder and director, has spent over four decades listening to what the body reveals. From her groundbreaking work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she created and continues to lead Dréa's Dream Dance Therapy program, to her private practice serving diverse communities across New York, Dr. Tortora has devoted her life to honoring the body's innate capacity to heal.

Dance therapy, as we practice it, is not about learning steps or performing movements. It is about feeling. It is about the gentle sway of a mother with her infant, the restless energy of a child who cannot find words, the trembling that holds years of unspoken pain, the joy that moves through us before we even know we're happy. Dance therapy is a felt experience, a bridge between sensation and understanding, between what the body knows and what the heart is ready to discover.

Our practice was born from the recognition that some experiences live beyond the reach of language. Preverbal trauma, infant attachment, the profound impact of medical treatment on young children, the way grief settles into our muscles, the anxiety that tightens our chest before our mind registers fear. These are the territories we navigate with care, presence, and deep respect for each person's unique journey.

Over the years, our work has touched lives across the developmental spectrum, from infants finding their first expressions of self to adults reconnecting with parts of themselves long forgotten. We have walked alongside families facing impossible challenges, individuals seeking to understand their own complexity, and children discovering that their bodies can be sources of joy rather than pain.

Our Mission

We exist to create a sanctuary where your body is honored, your felt experiences are valued, and your innate capacity for healing is awakened.

Our mission is to provide therapeutic care that reaches what traditional talk therapy cannot touch. We work with the unspoken, the preverbal, the deeply embodied experiences that shape who we are. Whether you're navigating trauma, seeking to understand yourself more fully, supporting your child's development, or simply feeling that something is missing from conventional approaches, we are here.

We believe that healing is not a destination but a dance, one that honors your unique rhythm, respects your body's wisdom, and celebrates your resilience.

Every person who comes to Dancing Dialogue brings their own story, their own struggles, their own capacity for growth. We meet you exactly where you are, with compassion, expertise, and an unwavering belief in your ability to find your way.

Our commitment extends beyond individual sessions. We contribute to the broader understanding of embodied therapy through research, teaching, and advocacy. Dr. Tortora's extensive publications and international lectures, along with our team's collective expertise, help shape the field of dance/movement therapy and bring this powerful modality to those who need it most.

Our Process & Approach

We Begin With What Your Body Already Knows

You are not a collection of symptoms or a problem to be solved. You are a whole person, and we work with your intrinsic strengths: your creativity, your intuition, your feelings, and your body's natural expressiveness.

The Body Speaks First

The body-mind connection we honor means we start with sensation, with movement, with the felt experience of being alive. This might look like gentle swaying with a caregiver, playful exploration with a child, mindful attention to breath, or expressive movement that gives form to emotions too complex for words.

What Sets Us Apart

We address what traditional therapy cannot reach: preverbal trauma, experiences that occurred before language, the impact of medical experiences on young children, and subtle disruptions in early attachment. We work in this territory with confidence, using nonverbal assessment and embodied intervention to support healing at the deepest levels.

Collaborative & Holistic

We work closely with families, coordinate with medical teams and schools when needed, and create a safe, beautiful space where expression is welcomed and your body can finally be heard.

Expert, Specialized Care

Our team brings together dance/movement therapy, art therapy, couples and family therapy, play therapy, and expertise in trauma, preverbal experiences, infant mental health, attachment, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and racial identity. Each clinician offers specialized depth, ensuring someone on our team can meet your unique needs.
