Max March-Steinman is a Dance/Movement Therapist who specializes in working with people whose lives have been shaken loose, whether by illness, by questions of identity, or by a season of transition, and who want a way through that moves with the body rather than around it.

He tends to work best with clients who are in the middle of something unfinished and are ready to be curious about it. His work draws on humanist and transpersonal approaches, IFS, DBT, mindfulness, and play, alongside creative arts and clowning traditions and a somatic lens informed by embodied neuroscience. Max pays close attention to interoceptive awareness and nervous system regulation, listening for how the body speaks and letting that lead the conversation.

Max holds an M.S. in Dance/Movement Therapy from Pratt, with additional training in IFS and DBT, and certifications in strength and conditioning (CSCS through the NSCA; PES and CES through NASM), sports psychology, and mindfulness-informed mental training. His clinical experience comes from Jamaica Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering, and over the years he has worked with circus performers and athletes, Afghan refugees, executives, and people in hospice. He brings more than a decade of experience as an educator, coach, and performer into the therapy room.

Max hopes clients find a sense of inner resourcing through movement and discover the power of their own curiosity, in therapy and in daily life. He wants the work to be a place where a deep well of inner peace stays reachable through play, even in the middle of stress, illness, or uncertainty.

Outside the therapy room, when he is not upside down in a handstand, Max loves foraging, cooking, hiking and climbing, writing poetry, meditating, spending time with a house full of pets, and enjoying the electronic music scene.

  • Max blends Dance/Movement Therapy with embodied neuroscience and sports psychology, which lets him move fluidly across medical, psychiatric, and performance settings.

  • With a deep background in teaching and coaching, he can translate complex ideas into practical, playful experiences you can feel in session.

  • His harm reduction experience and LGBTQ+ advocacy bring a grounded, nonjudgmental approach for clients navigating altered states, identity questions, and nontraditional life paths.

"Rather than symptoms to fix, our inner lives are vast landscapes with forests, caves, undergrowth, and weather patterns. My work is about helping clients map those terrains in the body, practice emotional ecology, and learn how to steward their inner weather with compassion, trust, and play."
